Ghana becomes 4th best African country for freedom, beating South Africa, Senegal and others 02.06.2026

Ghana has been recognized as the fourth freest country in Africa and 46th globally out of 164 nations in the Atlantic Council's Freedom and Prosperity Index, achieving a score of 73.2. This places Ghana ahead of countries like South Africa and Senegal, with only Seychelles, Cape Verde, and Mauritius ranking higher on the continent. The index evaluates political freedom, economic freedom, and the rule of law, alongside prosperity indicators such as income and health. Ghana's strong performance is attributed to its democratic progress, competitive elections, and active civil society, with a particular strength noted in women's economic freedom. However, the report also highlights significant economic challenges, evidenced by a lower prosperity score of 54.9 (115th globally), pointing to issues like high public debt and youth unemployment.
