Ghana reports South Africa to AU over Xenophobic attacks, pushes for urgent action 07.05.2026

Ghana has officially petitioned the African Union (AU) to address the persistent xenophobic attacks in South Africa during the June 2026 summit in El Alamein, Egypt. Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, communicated this on May 6, 2026, highlighting that these recurring incidents threaten the lives, safety, and investments of African nationals, contravening principles of African solidarity and unity. The Ghanaian government argues these attacks violate the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and undermine the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Ghana's proposals include formal AU deliberation, enhanced monitoring, a fact-finding mission to investigate root causes, and the promotion of reconciliation initiatives to foster tolerance and Pan-African unity.
