GLP-1 weight loss drugs are being linked to lower breast cancer risk. Experts are optimistic about a possible breakthrough. 02.06.2026

New research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine suggests that GLP-1 weight loss drugs may reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 30.5%. Analyzing data from over 110,000 women aged 45-80 with a BMI of 25 or higher, the study found that women taking GLP-1 medications were less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Even when matched for risk factors, GLP-1 users showed a 35% lower risk. Experts hypothesize that weight loss facilitated by these drugs may lower estrogen levels, a key driver for many breast cancers, particularly in postmenopausal women where obesity significantly increases risk. While not definitive proof, these findings are leading to optimism for potential cancer prevention, with a clinical trial, the INSPIRE Study, aiming to establish causality and potentially begin in six months.
