New research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine suggests that GLP-1 weight loss drugs may reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 30%. Analyzing data from over 110,000 women aged 45 to 80 with a BMI of 25 or higher, the study found that women who took GLP-1 medications were 30.5% less likely to develop breast cancer. When matched for other risk factors, this likelihood increased to 35%. Experts hypothesize that these drugs might combat breast cancer, particularly estrogen-receptor positive types, by reducing body fat and potentially inflammation, as obesity is a known risk factor, especially post-menopause. A clinical trial, INSPIRE, is being planned to establish a causal link, potentially offering a new preventive option for high-risk women.
