Google Maps changed the name of Lake Ontario, the easternmost Great Lake, to "Lake America" for U.S. users late Saturday, days after President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday mandating the rebranding in official government databases. The order is part of an ongoing tariff conflict with Canada, whose capital province is Ontario. This follows a similar order in January 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Google, Apple, Microsoft, and other map providers adopted the Gulf of America naming after the U.S. Department of the Interior updated its records. As expected, when federal records reflected "Lake America," Google quickly followed suit, while Apple Maps and Bing Maps have not yet changed but are expected to. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database, which informs these changes, still shows Lake Ontario as of Sunday morning, with a note that maps are "in the process of being updated."
