Google temporarily disabled YouTube’s advanced captions without warning 20.01.2026

Google has temporarily disabled YouTube's advanced SRV3 caption format, which allows for custom colors, transparency, animations, fonts, and precise positioning, due to playback errors affecting some users. This decision, made without prior warning, has frustrated creators who rely on the format for enhanced video styling and speaker differentiation. While Google states support for SRV3 has not been removed and they are working on a fix, new uploads in this format are currently blocked, and existing videos may not display captions until the issue is resolved. The company acknowledges that most uploaders use other caption formats and are unaffected, but offers no timeline for restoring full SRV3 functionality, potentially forcing creators to revert to less customizable options or AI-generated captions.
