Government decides to liquidate two fire and rescue brigades 07.07.2026

The Latvian government has decided to liquidate two "Latvijas dzelzceļa" (LDz) fire and rescue brigades in Liepāja and Ventspils. These changes are intended to optimize rescue service resources and save approximately 300,000 euros per year, as these units currently have a minimal workload. During the liquidation process, the service area of the Jelgava fire and rescue unit will be expanded to include the Ventspils and Liepāja stations to ensure operational response. The reorganization also includes a reduction of 15 staff positions and the decommissioning of two fire trains and one rescue train. The Ministry of Transport emphasizes that this step is economically efficient, given increasing losses and reduced freight transport. Employees will be transferred to other stations or have their employment contracts terminated. This reorganization occurs as LDz's turnover and losses show a trend that requires financial balance and improved efficiency.
