Govt allocates Sh25 billion for geothermal drilling projects 07.07.2026

The Tanzanian government has allocated Sh25 billion to the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) for the current financial year to advance geothermal drilling and resource confirmation. This funding supports critical operations at the Ngozi geothermal project in the Mbeya Region, where three wells are planned to reach depths of 1.5 kilometers, and the Kiejo-Mbaka project in the Songwe Region. Additionally, scientific studies are underway for the Luhoi and Natron projects. TGDC Acting Managing Director Shakiru Kajugus stated that these efforts are part of a long-term strategy to diversify energy sources and meet the national goal of generating 130MW of geothermal power by 2030. While the technology is relatively new in Tanzania, the TGDC is partnering with academic institutions to address local expertise shortages and build capacity for future electricity generation.
