Grand Master's Palace tapestries return home after restoration in Belgium 25.06.2026

The historic tapestries of the Grand Master's Palace have returned after nearly two years of conservation at De Wit Royal Manufacturers in Belgium. Minister Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said the investment reflects Malta's commitment to heritage, while President Myriam Spiteri Debono called them a unique treasure and urged greater awareness of conservation. Part of the gioia of Grand Master Ramon Perellos, the tapestries were commissioned in 1708 from the Gobelins manufactory and arrived in Malta in 1710. Their exotic scenes are drawn from the Tenture des Indes series. The set is the only complete surviving one woven from the original cartoons and has remained in the same hall for over 300 years, last restored in 1910.
