Greece moves to protect minors from social media with new ban for kids under 15 09.04.2026

Greece is implementing a ban on social media for children aged 15 and under, aiming to pressure the European Union into establishing bloc-wide age restrictions. The new law, expected to take effect on January 1, 2025, will require platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to reverify user ages. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated the ban is intended to protect minors from the stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness induced by excessive social media use, emphasizing it targets addictive platform designs rather than technology itself. Greece is following France's lead and has urged the European Commission to create a unified framework for protecting minors online, including standardized age verification and penalties for non-compliance, with potential fines up to 6% of global turnover.
