Greek airspace blackout linked to old systems, not cyberattack, report says 14.01.2026

An eight-hour radio outage on January 4th, which led to the clearance of Greek airspace and the diversion of numerous flights, has been attributed by an investigative report to an outdated communications system rather than a cyberattack. The incident occurred when multiple systems fell out of sync, disrupting communication between air traffic controllers and planes, though it was deemed "low risk" for flight safety. The report highlighted that the Civil Aviation Authority's voice communication system and supporting infrastructure rely on obsolete technology no longer supported by manufacturers. Greek telecommunications provider OTE had previously warned of the need for system upgrades since 2019. While the transport ministry stated Greece's systems meet EU standards and an upgrade plan is underway for completion in 2028, unions argue the system is dangerous, especially given Greece's high tourism volume.
