UK Greens win closely-watched Manchester area election, Labour third 27.02.2026

In a significant electoral upset, the Green Party has secured a victory in the closely-watched parliamentary by-election for Gorton and Denton in Manchester, a traditional Labour stronghold. The Green candidate, Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old plumber, won with nearly 15,000 votes, marking the party's first-ever parliamentary by-election win and increasing their representation in the British parliament to five MPs. The ruling Labour party, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suffered an embarrassing third-place finish with just over 9,300 votes, falling behind even the hard-right, anti-immigrant Reform UK party, which garnered approximately 10,500 votes. This result, occurring in a seat Labour previously dominated with almost 51% of the vote in the July 2024 general election, highlights the fracturing of Britain's traditional two-party system and intensifies pressure on Starmer, who is reportedly the most unpopular British prime minister since surveys began.
