Grüne für radikalen Bürgergeldvorstoß: Auswirkungen für bestimmte Gruppe geplant – Sanktionen im Visier 23.02.2026

The Green Party is advocating for a significant change to Germany's Bürgergeld (citizen's income) system, proposing that families with children be exempt from benefit cuts. This push comes in response to alarming statistics revealing that in 2024, nearly 16,800 minors were affected by Bürgergeld sanctions, an increase of approximately 5400 from the previous year. These cuts impacted 8300 households with children, including 3700 single-parent families, with an average reduction of 63 Euros per month. Greens argue these sanctions disproportionately harm children, exacerbating child poverty, while the Federal Ministry of Labour maintains children are protected as sanctions only target the responsible adult's basic needs. This debate occurs as the Bundestag considers a broader reform to replace Bürgergeld with a new "Grundsicherung" emphasizing "Fördern und Fordern" (support and demand), with potential for substantial benefit reductions for missed appointments or rejected training.
