Grüne wollen Bürgergeldempfänger mit Kindern nicht länger sanktionieren 23.02.2026

The Green Party is advocating for an end to sanctions against recipients of Bürgergeld (citizen's income) who have children, citing a significant increase in affected minors. Data from a Green Party inquiry reveals that in 2024, nearly 16,800 children were impacted by benefit reductions due to parental non-compliance, a rise from approximately 5,400 fewer children the previous year. These sanctions, averaging a €63 reduction, are seen by the Greens as exacerbating child poverty, with Fraktionsvize Misbah Khan calling them a "fire accelerant for child poverty." The proposed Bürgergeld reform, currently debated in parliament by the Union and SPD, aims to reintroduce "Fördern und Fordern" (support and demand) principles, including a 30% reduction for missed appointments and a complete halt for repeated violations, though exceptions for the mentally ill are planned. The Ministry of Labour maintains that children are protected as their portion of the benefit is unaffected.
