Groep Wallenondernemers: "Voer geen coffeeshopverbod voor buitenlanders in" 05.03.2026

A group of entrepreneurs in Amsterdam's Red Light District is urging the city council and mayor to abandon plans for an "inhabitant criterion" (i-criterion) that would restrict coffeeshop access to Dutch residents only. Signed by representatives from the Veiligheidsoverleg Wallen and the Blaauwlakenblok Bewonersvereniging, including Joachim Helms of Green House coffeeshop, the entrepreneurs fear this measure will push cannabis sales onto the streets, leading to increased nuisance and uncontrolled trade. They cite the COVID-19 period as evidence of how quickly street dealing can escalate, potentially compromising safety and livability. The decision on the i-criterion rests with the new city council following the March 18th elections, with a previous majority against the measure, though the PvdA has since expressed support.
