Hantavirus: Canary Islands objects to docking of cruise ship 06.05.2026

Spain has approved the docking of the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Canary Islands following a hantavirus outbreak that killed three passengers, but regional authorities led by Fernando Clavijo object, citing safety concerns and insufficient information. The ship, anchored off Cape Verde after the outbreak, is en route to Tenerife within three to four days. Evacuated patients include three suspected cases to the Netherlands (nationals of Netherlands, Britain, Germany) and a German woman to Düsseldorf, while a Swiss man tested positive upon return. The World Health Organization confirms the Andes virus strain, which can spread between people, though rarely. Hantavirus is rodent-borne, causing flu-like symptoms. Spain overrules regional objections based on international law and humanitarian principles, noting Cape Verde's inability to manage the situation.
