Hari Raya korban controversy reignites wave of anti-Rohingya sentiment in Malaysia 03.06.2026

A Hari Raya Haji korban ritual involving a Rohingya community in Malaysia has triggered a significant surge in anti-refugee sentiment, amplified by online backlash and misinformation. The incident, initially concerning waste disposal after the sacrifice of 60 cattle in Selangor, escalated into a broader attack on the Rohingya, with an online petition demanding their removal garnering over 130,000 signatures. Activists note this reflects a recurring pattern where localized issues involving the Rohingya quickly ignite widespread hostility, fueled by accusations of burdening public resources and competing for jobs. Malaysia hosts over 200,000 refugees, including more than 120,000 Rohingya, who lack formal legal status and face discrimination in employment and housing. The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) has condemned this "dangerous dehumanisation" and urged the public to reject harmful stereotypes.
