Has Ghana acquired a new national airline? All you must know about Air Ghana’s Boeing 737-400 freighter 05.05.2026

On May 5, 2026, Air Ghana, a privately owned cargo airline, landed a new Boeing 737-400 freighter in Ghana, significantly boosting the nation's air cargo capacity and trade potential. Despite social media speculation, Air Ghana is not the new national airline; it has operated since 1993, focusing on cargo services. Separately, the Ghanaian government is progressing with plans to establish a state-owned national airline, targeting a launch by early 2027. A 10-member task force, chaired by Charles Asare, is overseeing this project, which aims to operate long-haul passenger routes and a cargo division under a joint venture model with private investors holding majority stake. This distinction highlights that Air Ghana's expansion is a private sector achievement, while the national airline remains in preliminary stages.
