Hastie could testify in Roberts-Smith murder trial 09.04.2026

Andrew Hastie, Australia's shadow defence minister and a former SAS captain, has indicated he may be called to testify in the upcoming murder trial of Ben Roberts-Smith, Australia's most-decorated living soldier. Roberts-Smith was arrested on Tuesday and faces five war crime charges related to alleged murders in Afghanistan. Hastie, who previously testified under oath in Roberts-Smith's defamation case, stated that while he might be a witness, he is exercising caution to avoid prejudicing the criminal proceedings, emphasizing Roberts-Smith's right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. Hastie also acknowledged the findings of the 2020 Brereton report, which identified credible wrongdoing within the elite regiment, and stressed the importance of Australia acknowledging both its successes and failures in Afghanistan.
