Havanna versinkt im Müll: Bilder zeigen die Folgen der US-Sanktionen gegen Kuba 17.02.2026

Havanna is facing a severe waste management crisis, with garbage piling up in the streets due to a critical fuel shortage exacerbated by intensified US sanctions. President Donald Trump's administration has blocked oil shipments from Venezuela to Cuba and threatened tariffs on other nations supplying the island, leading to a drastic reduction in available fuel. Consequently, only 44 out of 106 municipal garbage trucks are operational, leaving residents to dump waste on already overflowing street corners. This situation, which began in the past two months, is impacting public health, with warnings issued in other cities, and has prompted concern from UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The fuel scarcity also affects essential services like school meals, maternity wards, and nursing homes, disproportionately harming vulnerable populations.
