The latest data from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) confirms significant excess mortality during the recent heatwave in Switzerland. The mortality rate for individuals over the age of 65 is currently approximately 15 percent above the seasonally expected level, representing about 200 additional deaths. Compared to the heatwave summer of 2015, when the rate stood at 18 percent, there is a clear increase compared to the previous year. Since heat is rarely listed as a direct cause of death on death certificates, but rather exacerbates heart attacks or respiratory diseases, scientists refer to this phenomenon as excess mortality. The FSO data has a reporting lag of about ten days and is still incomplete. While heat action plans in the summers of 2018 and 2019 reduced excess mortality, Switzerland still lacks uniformity, as only eight of the 26 cantons have implemented complete plans according to WHO criteria.
