Hidden AirTags and ‘black mass’: The mystery of Australia’s missing batteries 06.05.2026

Former employees of Ecocycle, Australia's largest battery recycler, allege that the company is systematically dumping, stockpiling, or burning millions of used batteries instead of recycling them. An investigation utilizing AirTags secretly placed in batteries suggests they are being diverted from Ecocycle's main processing facility in Campbellfield, Melbourne, to a sister company's scrap metal site in Ringwood, which has a history of environmental violations. These allegations come amidst growing concerns about the environmental and fire risks posed by improper battery disposal, with lithium batteries being a significant fire hazard. The Battery Stewardship Council is investigating Ecocycle due to its inability to verify the fate of all collected batteries. Ecocycle denies any wrongdoing, stating all batteries are processed at their Campbellfield facility and that the Environment Protection Authority has found no recent issues at their worksites.
