Hilton, Becerra, in the lead with votes still being counted in battle for California governor 03.06.2026

In California's gubernatorial race, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra are leading in early, uncertified results as votes are still being tallied, positioning them to advance to the general election in November. Hilton, a conservative commentator endorsed by President Trump, pledged to reduce costs for Californians, stating "change is coming." Becerra, a former California Attorney General and Biden administration Cabinet secretary, emphasized the historic nature of his potential victory as the state's first Latino governor since 1875. This primary features California's "jungle primary" system where the top two vote-getters advance, regardless of party. Billionaire Tom Steyer is currently in third place, with significant outside money also invested in the race among a large field of 61 candidates.
