Hoe de leeuwenfamilie boze geesten wegjaagt in het haagse chinatown 22.02.2026

In The Hague's Chinatown, martial artist Aristos Ginos, 34, prepares to perform the traditional lion dance for Chinese New Year, a role he has held for fourteen years and considers a great honor. Alongside dozens of other dancers and musicians, Ginos and his partner Stanley Pattiasina, 33, will embody the "lion's hindquarters," a physically demanding role requiring years of training and precise coordination. The lion dance, which symbolizes strength and the warding off of evil spirits, is increasingly being hired by large international companies to celebrate the new year, bringing joy and positive energy. This year, the celebration in The Hague will commence with Mayor Jan van Zanen striking a gong, followed by a procession through Chinatown, including a special "lettuce ceremony" where the lion "eats" and spits out lettuce for good fortune.
