Homan: "Things weren't perfect" in Minneapolis, but ICE not backing down 05.05.2026

Tom Homan, President Trump's border czar, acknowledged that the large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, known as Operation Metro Surge, "weren't perfect" but emphasized the administration is not retreating from its mass deportation agenda. In a Phoenix interview, Homan stated he and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin are implementing a "smarter way" to conduct deportations, shifting from broad sweeps to targeted operations focused on individuals with criminal records. This change follows the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal agents, which sparked bipartisan backlash and led to Homan being charged with winding down the Minneapolis operation. Homan affirmed that any agents found to have violated law or policy in those shootings must be held responsible, though investigations are ongoing. He denied the administration is backing down, citing roughly 800,000 deportations since Trump's return and asserting that "mass operations" will continue, particularly in sanctuary cities.
