‘Horrific’ attack on Indonesian rights defender a litmus test for Prabowo administration 17.03.2026

A brutal acid attack on Indonesian human rights activist Andrie Yunus on March 12 in Jakarta's Menteng neighborhood has ignited national and international outrage, serving as a critical test for the new Prabowo administration. Yunus, deputy coordinator of Kontras, sustained severe burns covering 20 percent of his body, including damage to his right eye, after being sprayed with acid by a passenger on a passing motorcycle, an incident captured on CCTV. This attack occurs amidst a significant rise in intimidation against activists and journalists, with victim numbers jumping 82.5 percent from 2023 to 2025. Authorities face intense pressure to identify not only the perpetrators but also the "intellectual actors" behind the assault, a challenge underscored by past investigations into similar incidents, such as the 2017 acid attack on former Corruption Eradication Commission investigator Novel Baswedan.
