As the UK endures an exceptional heatwave, South East Water has become the first water company to enforce an official hosepipe ban, covering much of Kent and advising customers in Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, and Sussex to pause all non-essential use. The ban carries a potential fine of up to £1,000 for breaches, distinguishing it from mere advisory notices. The company reported treating 644 million litres of water on Sunday—56 million litres above the June average of 588 million litres. Other utilities, including Wessex Water and Affinity Water, have issued requests for customers to limit water usage but have not yet imposed formal bans.
