Hospital first to use AI for spotting infections 07.07.2026

East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust (EKHUFT) has become the first NHS trust in the United Kingdom to implement MEMORI, a specialized artificial intelligence tool designed to identify infections in patients at an early stage. Utilized at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, the software analyzes routine clinical data, including blood tests, blood pressure, temperature, medications, and demographics, to generate individual infection risk scores. Developed through a collaboration with UK health technology firm Sanome, the tool aims to predict hospital-acquired infections before physical symptoms manifest. Ward manager Julie Jones and Dr. Mike Bedford emphasized that the technology is intended to support, rather than replace, medical staff. By automating the laborious task of analyzing patient records, the AI allows nurses and consultants to focus more on direct patient care and rehabilitation, ultimately improving hospital bed flow and patient outcomes.
