D.C. Water, the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, has transformed its wastewater treatment operations over the past decade by converting human waste into a fertilizer product called Bloom. Instead of hauling solid waste away for disposal—a process that costs millions and increases carbon emissions—the utility invested in technology from Norwegian company Cambi to process the solids into biosolid fertilizer. This process not only creates high-quality compost but also generates biogas, which can be used to produce electricity for the treatment plant or sold to the grid. According to Cambi CEO Eirik Fadnes, the method yields up to 40% more biogas than traditional treatment.
