How Eriksen's heart device kicked into action 08.06.2026

Christian Eriksen is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon in good spirits following his collapse during a Denmark vs. Ukraine match on Sunday. His life was saved by an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device inserted into his chest that detected and corrected an abnormal heart rhythm, delivering an electrical shock to restore a normal pattern. This is not the first time Eriksen has experienced cardiac arrest; he suffered a similar event in 2021 during the European Championships, where he received CPR and was treated with an external defibrillator. The ICD, implanted after his previous collapse, acted as an internal safety net. Experts explain that ICDs are highly effective, functioning like a "shock box" that can reset the heart by delivering an electrical jolt, comparable to a "thump in the chest."
