How Malian jihadists and pro-independence groups joined forces to overthrow the junta 07.07.2026

In a significant shift in regional dynamics, the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM) have formed an alliance of convenience against Mali's military junta. Following their successful April 25 offensive that captured Kidal and killed Defense Minister General Sadio Camara, the two groups launched simultaneous attacks on Saturday, July 4, across northern, central, and southern Mali. Intense fighting is currently concentrated in Anéfis, a strategic checkpoint located 120 kilometers south of Kidal. The town serves as a vital link on the road connecting Kidal to the major cities of Gao and Timbuktu. The Malian army and its Russian Africa Corps partners are currently entrenched in Anéfis's military camp, attempting to defend the location against the combined forces of the FLA and JNIM.
