Hundreds of whales slaughtered in Faroe Islands as annual cull turns sea blood red 03.06.2026

In a gruesome annual event on the Faroe Islands, over 700 whales and dolphins were slaughtered last week during hunts known locally as ‘the grind.’ The sea turned red with blood as pilot whales and bottlenose and white-sided dolphins were driven to shore and killed with hooks and knives. Welfare groups condemned the practice, citing extreme animal cruelty and noting that participants ran out of mandated spinal lances. Valentina Crast of Sea Shepherd described chaotic scenes and urged European governments to ban the hunts, while PETA called for an immediate and permanent ban, emphasizing the animals' intelligence and capacity to feel pain. The Faroese parliament recently voted to prioritize local hunting regulations over animal welfare laws, shielding whalers from prosecution.
