Hungary and Ukraine agree on minority rights, paving way for EU talks 03.06.2026

Hungary and Ukraine have reached a significant agreement concerning the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, a development that could unblock the first cluster of Ukraine's European Union accession talks. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the breakthrough on June 3, stating that Ukraine will reinstate a minority school system, permit native language use in all educational settings, and allow ethnic Hungarians to display national symbols and take exams in Hungarian. This accord resolves a protracted dispute that had hampered relations and Hungary's support for Ukraine's EU aspirations. Magyar indicated that Hungary would endorse the opening of the initial negotiation chapter if Ukraine enshrines these terms in legislation and its EU accession action plan, though Hungary does not favor accelerated membership.
