Hungary's Orbán stakes his reelection on anti-Ukraine message 25.02.2026

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is employing an aggressive, disinformation-laden media campaign to secure reelection on April 12, shifting the election's focus from economic issues to portraying neighboring Ukraine as the primary threat to Hungary. Orbán's strategy, which includes taxpayer-funded billboards featuring AI-generated images and petitions, argues that aligning with the EU in supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion will bankrupt Hungary and lead to its youth being conscripted. This campaign comes as Orbán, Hungary's longest-serving leader, faces his strongest challenge from center-right challenger Péter Magyar, who advocates for restoring democratic institutions and improving living costs. Orbán has also recently blocked EU sanctions on Russia and threatened to veto further pro-Ukraine policies, deepening his country's cooperation with Russia despite widespread international condemnation.
