Hypothermic hikers rescued from B.C. backcountry after severe thunderstorm 23.08.2026

Lions Bay Search and Rescue (LBSAR) responded to a distress call around 11:40 a.m. on Sunday after two hikers became hypothermic during a severe thunderstorm that swept through southern B.C. on Saturday night. The storm, which recorded over 7,000 lightning strikes, damaged the hikers' tent near Magnesia Meadows in Cypress Provincial Park, ripping away the rain fly and soaking their clothing and equipment. The pair endured the night in cold, wet conditions before making their way to the Magnesia Meadows emergency shelter, where another group helped them call 911.
