‘I spend 8 hours a day on my phone - I’m addicted’ 02.06.2026

A study by Virgin Media O2 involving 6,000 individuals in the UK has revealed that people are set to spend an average of 4.7 years of their waking lives using their phones unintentionally. Charlotte Graham, a 41-year-old mother of three and social media manager from Lancashire, exemplifies this, admitting to spending up to eight hours daily on her phone, experiencing anxiety when unable to connect. This unintentional phone use accumulates to approximately 523 hours annually per person, with an estimated 14 million Britons spending over half their phone time without a clear purpose. Experts suggest that technology is designed to capture attention, contributing to these habits, and advocate for greater awareness and healthier digital practices for adults, not just children.
