Senator Angus King, who was briefed by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, stated that the man killed was not the intended target of the operation. The intended target was a man subject to a final removal order. King reported that the victim was shot after allegedly "weaponizing" his vehicle by driving it at an agent. Crucially, King noted that body cameras were not activated on the agents, resulting in no video evidence of the shooting. The FBI is leading the investigation.
