NASA has officially declared its Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft defunct following a loss of contact on December 6, 2025. While orbiting Mars since September 21, 2014, MAVEN studied the Red Planet's atmosphere, contributing significantly to understanding atmospheric escape. An anomaly review board determined that an unusually high rotation rate upon reemerging from behind Mars likely drained the spacecraft's batteries, disabling its communication system and rendering it unrecoverable. Although the precise cause of the anomaly remains under investigation, MAVEN's mission has concluded, though its collected data will continue to inform scientific research.
