Suite à un incendie dévastateur dans un hôtel du sud de Delhi qui a coûté la vie à 21 personnes, les autorités ont arrêté le propriétaire de l'établissement, Lavkesh Bajaj. L'incendie, qui aurait débuté dans la cuisine du sous-sol de l'hôtel vers 8h30 mercredi, est suspecté d'avoir été aggravé par le fait que l'hôtel exploitait 25 chambres, dépassant largement les six approuvées dans le cadre de la politique "Bed & Breakfast" du gouvernement de Delhi. En réponse à cette tragédie, le gouvernement de Delhi a lancé une inspection d'un mois dans toute la ville sur la conformité en matière de sécurité incendie dans les hôtels, les maisons d'hôtes, les maisons de retraite et autres locaux commerciaux, les établissements non conformes risquant la fermeture et des poursuites judiciaires. Parmi les personnes décédées figurent 12 ressortissants étrangers originaires de pays tels que le Bangladesh, le Nigeria, le Mozambique et le Libéria, et 9 Indiens.
