India: Fire safety crackdown ordered after Delhi hotel fire 04.06.2026

Following a devastating fire at a New Delhi hotel that claimed 21 lives, the owner, Lavkesh Bajaj, has been arrested, and a criminal case has been filed. The blaze, which reportedly started in the hotel's basement kitchen around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of twelve foreign nationals and nine Indians, with many individuals rescued from upper floors jumping onto mattresses. In response to the tragedy, which is the deadliest in New Delhi since 2022, the Delhi government has initiated a month-long city-wide inspection drive to enforce fire safety compliance in various establishments, including hotels and nursing homes, with non-compliant premises facing sealing and prosecution. The hotel was allegedly operating 25 rooms, exceeding its approved six-room capacity.
