India refuses to criminalise marital rape. This new series shines a light on it 12.04.2026

The Indian web series "Chiraiya," which premiered on JioHotstar in March, is sparking crucial conversations about marital rape in a country that has not criminalized it. The show, watched by millions and lauded by critics for tackling a taboo subject, follows two women, Kamlesh and Pooja, whose lives intersect when Pooja experiences marital rape by her husband, Arun. Arun dismisses her trauma, citing India's lack of laws against marital rape. The series explores themes of consent within marriage, societal stigma, and the transformation of Kamlesh, a homemaker initially steeped in patriarchal beliefs, into an ally for Pooja. Despite opposition from religious groups and some activists, the government has resisted calls to amend colonial-era laws that exempt husbands from charges of forced sex with their wives.
