India should look for geographical diversification for gas, says former IOCL Executive Director 01.04.2026

Sandeep Jain, former Executive Director (Gas) at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), advises India to pursue geographical diversification for its gas supply to mitigate risks from Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions. He suggests considering "Russian-sanctioned LNG" to prevent demand destruction and economic depression due to high import costs. Jain highlights that the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, particularly impacting the Strait of Hormuz, jeopardizes 20% of global LNG, crude oil, and LPG flow. India, importing 60-70% of its LPG with 90% passing through this strait, is significantly affected, with disruptions impacting households. While public sector units have found alternative crude sources, the LNG sector faces severe constraints, with force majeure declarations from major producers like Qatar Energy and ADNOC cutting supply by over 50% to Indian industries.
