India shuts Kashmir medical college – after Muslims earned more admissions 15.01.2026

The National Medical Commission (NMC) on January 6 revoked the recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical Institute (SMVDMI) in Reasi, Indian-administered Kashmir, following protests by right-wing Hindu groups. The controversy arose after the college's inaugural MBBS batch of 50 students in November comprised 42 Muslims, seven Hindus, and one Sikh. Hindu groups argued that since the college was funded by donations to the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, Muslim students should not be admitted. Despite the NMC citing deficiencies in faculty, infrastructure, and patient care, students and analysts questioned the timing and validity of these claims, suggesting the decision was politically motivated and a capitulation to religious pressure. The 50 affected students are now being offered admissions in other colleges in the region.
