Indian court sentences high-profile journalist to 10 years for rape 06.08.2026

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday sentenced Tarun Tejpal, a 62-year-old high-profile journalist and former editor of Tehelka magazine, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a female colleague during a magazine event in 2013. The incident occurred in a lift at a five-star hotel in Goa, and the court also ordered Tejpal to pay a fine of $5,250. Goa Police investigator Sunita Sawant confirmed the sentence, stating Tejpal has been given two weeks to surrender. This verdict overturns a 2021 acquittal by a Goa court, which had dismissed charges of rape, sexual harassment, and wrongful restraint. The Goa government challenged that decision, leading to the conviction.
