Nigeria to hold inquest into death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's toddler 26.02.2026

An inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, will commence on April 14 at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos. Nkanu died on January 7 at Euracare hospital after undergoing pre-flight investigations, including an MRI and spinal tap, following admission to Atlantis Hospital for a mild illness. Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, allege Euracare's negligence, claiming their son was denied oxygen and given excessive sedation, leading to cardiac arrest. Euracare has denied these accusations, stating their care met international standards. The court will hear evidence from medical experts and hospital representatives to determine the circumstances and cause of death, with witness statements to be filed in advance.
