Inside Trump's $11 billion health plan to replace "neo-colonial" USAID 14.01.2026

The Trump administration is launching the $11 billion "America First Global Health Strategy" to reshape foreign health assistance, aiming to boost U.S. influence by sending funds directly to foreign governments and organizations, bypassing NGOs previously funded by USAID. This initiative, which has already secured 15 agreements with African nations committing $11.1 billion from the U.S. and $12.2 billion in matching funds, focuses on improving health systems for HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and maternal health. While proponents argue it builds self-reliance and avoids a "neo-colonial mindset," critics express concerns about potential corruption and the capacity of recipient nations to manage funds effectively, citing past failures and high corruption levels. The strategy also aligns with U.S. strategic and business interests, as seen in agreements linked to mining opportunities and the provision of American pharmaceuticals and technology.
