Eradication of invasive skunk cabbage underway in eastern france 03.07.2026

An eradication effort is underway in the Grand Est region of France to remove an invasive plant species that has overtaken marshes. Jonathan Fischbach of the Office national des forêts (ONF) reported on June 9 that 446 white skunk cabbage plants (Lysichiton camtschatcensis) were dug up in the Ingwiller forest in Reipertswiller, a Natura 2000 site. This marks the first recorded wild sighting of the species in France, according to the Conservatoire Botanique Alsace Lorraine. The plant, native to northeast Asia, features white flowers resembling arum lilies and broad leaves up to 90 cm, and is considered an emerging exotic invasive species (EEE) that threatens local ecosystem balance.
