Iran’s Hormuz tolls would set a dangerous precedent, says global shipping watchdog 09.04.2026

The head of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, has stated that Iran charging tolls for passage through the Strait of Hormuz would establish a dangerous and unacceptable precedent. This waterway is crucial, handling approximately one-fifth of global oil and natural gas flows. Iran reportedly included control over the Strait, including tolls, as a condition for a ceasefire. Dominguez expressed concern that such a mechanism, not aligned with international practice, might not guarantee ship safety. Maritime traffic through the Strait remains largely halted, and the IMO is working to reinstate pre-war transit procedures, which involved an international traffic separation scheme.
