Iraqi Industry: Billions in Losses and Vanishing Job Opportunities After 2003 07.07.2026

The industrial sector in Iraq has witnessed a sharp decline since 2003, leading to the closure of thousands of factories and plants and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs. MP Mukhtar Mahmoud explained that security instability, the absence of national plans, the flooding of markets with imported products, and aging production lines were the primary reasons for this collapse. Imran al-Qaisi, a former member of the Labor Unions Federation, noted that the Diyala Governorate alone has lost 90% of its factories, causing approximately 20,000 workers to lose their livelihoods. Experts emphasize that reviving this vital sector requires a comprehensive national strategy that includes protecting local products from unfair competition, modernizing production technology, and combating corruption that favors imports. It is expected that the industrial sector could contribute 20% of state revenues if a suitable investment environment is provided.
