Irish footballers and celebrities urge boycott of Israel matches 07.05.2026

A campaign group, Irish Sport for Palestine, alongside prominent Irish footballers and celebrities, is urging the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to boycott upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Israel. The open letter cites Israel's actions in Gaza and alleged breaches of UEFA and FIFA statutes regarding teams playing on occupied Palestinian land as reasons for the boycott. Signatories include League of Ireland players, former coach Brian Kerr, and musicians like Fontaines D C. Despite a majority of FAI members voting in November 2025 to press UEFA to suspend Israel, the FAI CEO warns of potential disqualification from future competitions if fixtures are boycotted. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has stated the matches should proceed, while a poll indicates 76 percent of Irish football fans oppose the fixtures.
